4 Tips on How to be Successful in Sales

I get asked all the time “What’s the magic sauce to creating a long and fulfilling career in sales?”

As much as I would love to prescribe that “secret sauce” to everyone in sales, it’s a little more complicated than that.

The question itself reminds me of a scene from one of my son’s favorite movies Space Jam. In the final scene, you have the Loony Toons basketball team consisting of characters that aren’t exactly athletic. Think Daffy Duck, Bugs Bunny, and Tweety Bird to name a few. They are playing a basketball game against the Mon-Stars, a small group of aliens who invaded earth and stole some of the greatest talent from NBA players. In order to save earth from a full-scale alien invasion, the Loony Toons have to win against all odds.

During halftime and the Toons are down but not out. When the half-time pep talk comes around, they are all excited to drink some ‘‘magic sauce’’ that Bugs Bunny introduced to the team for motivation. This Magic Sauce will provide them with the competitive advantage that they need to win. After the team’s confidence boost and, not to ruin the movie, a higher-performing second half, we find out there was no ‘‘secret sauce’’ after all. It was just water…

Much like that scene, there is no ‘‘secret sauce’’ that we can drink and be successful in sales. However, I do believe there are a few tips and techniques that when learned and practiced will absolutely contribute towards a successful and fulfilling career in sales. The ‘‘magic’’ is that it doesn’t matter if you’re representing a product or a service. It doesn’t matter if you’re selling houses or sandwiches. These tips and techniques will help you grow into the very best version of yourself.
